Below is information on public train transport in the Spanish provinces of Almería and Granada
with details on the regional rail network, booking
tickets (types of ticket, discounts and reductions), taking
bicycles on trains and travelling with animals.
- RENFE (La Red de los Ferrocarriles Españoles) is the Spanish national rail service provider. The RENFE English-language website has a trip planner and displays times and prices
- RENFE Alta Velocidad is the high-speed long distance (larga distancia) train network which operates from northern to southern Spain via Madrid. Currently there are lines from Madrid to Seville, Camp de Tarragona, Huesca and Málaga

Booking Tickets
Train tickets can be booked online up to two hours before travel using the
RENFE TIKNET
system. Seats on AVE, AV Media Distancia, Talgo 200, TRD Trains, R-598 and all Great Lines trains are available. Reservations are valid for 48 hours.

To buy a ticket via TIKNET:
- Customers must register, and enter the first eight digits of their passport number, DNI
or identification card when purchasing
- Credit cards and identification used for purchase must be authenticated in person at a RENFE
station when collecting tickets for the first online purchase. For future
purchases, this will not be necessary.
Tickets are sold at the following train stations:

Alternatively, tickets can be purchased from travel agents in Almería, Granada, other Spanish cities and in other countries.

Types of tickets
- Inter Rail provides train connections around Europe. Tickets are valid for up to one month and allow an unlimited number trips in 30 European countries and Morocco in second class.
- Eurail is an international pass available to anyone who is not a European, Russian, Turkish, Moroccan, Algerian or Tunisian resident. It is valid for six months. There are four travel options available including the Eurail Global Pass, Eurail Select Pass, Eurail Regional Pass and Eurail National Pass.
- Rail Plus cards are non-transferable and entitle the cardholder to discounted prices on rail travel with certain train companies. There are two types of railcard available to people under 26 years or over 60 years of age.
Identification and proof or residency are needed to buy and use a Rail Plus
card. This card allows a 25% discount on tickets.
Reductions & Discounts
- Children under six years of age travel free on RENFE
trains
- A reduction of 50% is given on the price of a single or return ticket for
children under twelve years of age
- Group discounts are available but apply only if the group is making the same journey at the same
time on the same date
- A Tarjeta Dorada (Golden Ticket) is available for pensioners (over 60
years of age) and
people with a 65% or more disability. The ticket qualifies holders for a 40%
reduction on the price of single or return journeys any day of the week. Those
accompanying a disabled traveller also receive the discount.
- Family discounts are also available but are dependent on family size and
circumstance. Inquire at ticket offices.

Bicycles on Trains in Spain
Bicycles may be taken on RENFE trains under the following circumstances.
Long distance (larga distancia) trains with sleeping carriages:
- If the bike is being kept in the compartment (couchette) there must
be space without inconvenience to anyone outside the travelling group
- A maximum of two bikes can be stowed in each compartment
- Pedals and panniers should be removed and the handle bars should be turned
at 90 degrees
- The loading and unloading is the passenger's responsibility
Most medium distance trains (media distancia):
- Only one bike per passenger
- The passenger must have a valid ticket for themselves and the bicycle
- Groups travelling with more than three bicycles must get authorisation
from RENFE in advance
- The loading and unloading is the passenger's responsibility

Animals on Trains in Spain
National RENFE train lines
Dogs, cats and domestic animals may travel on
RENFE
trains however the following restrictions apply for national RENFE trains
(Grandes Lineas):
- Only one pet per accompanying passenger is allowed on board
- The person accompanying the animal is responsible for it and any damage
caused by it on the journey
- Animals must weigh less than 6 Kg
- Animals must be kept in a cage (unless seats in a cabin are booked); the
cage may be no larger than 65cm x 35cm x 35cm and must be able to contain
any excrement made by the animal
- Where applicable, dogs must wear a muzzle
- A ticket must be purchased for the travelling animal; the fare is
usually 50 percent of the accompanying human fare
- Guide dogs for the blind are allowed free of charge on RENFE trains
