The Indalo Man in Almería

Information on the prehistoric Andalucian symbol - El Indalo - first discovered in La Cueva de Los Letreros, with links to further information and images.

The Indalo man (El Indalo) is the emblem of Almería. It is a prehistoric Andalucian symbol dating back approximately 5,000 years and depicts a man with outstretched arms holding an arch or rainbow. The symbol was first discovered in La Cueva de Los Letreros, situated in the Sierra Maria-Los Vélez mountains.

The term "Indalo" was coined by a group of avant-garde artists who first used the symbol as their emblem.

The Indalo Man is believed to bring good luck. It is seen particularly around Mojácar where residents paint it on their houses believing it will ward off the evil eye and provide protection from storms.
