English Language Media in Almería and Granada

A world of information, both local and global - in English. The local and international English-language print and broadcast media that is available to you if you live in Almeria.
Radio

The BBC World Service can be received on short wave, while the main BBC stations and other English-language radio can be received via many satellite TV installations. Click here for West and South West Europe's frequency chart, or here for the listing of frequencies - note that all times given are GMT, so you must add an hour during winter and two hours during summer for local time (CET).

Voice of America is also available on short wave, with NewsNow.

Almería and Granada Radio Stations in English

  • R.E.M fm: Broadcasting on the South Mediterranean coast with music, news and sport in English language
    105.1 FM
  • Spectrum FM: Broadcasting on the south coast of Spain including the Costa de Almería, Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca, it offers English-language chat shows, music, requests and local news
    92.6 FM
  • Coastline FM: Radio station covering the Costa Tropical and Costa del Sol. Broadcasts music, news and weather, competitions and interviews 24 hours a day 
    97.6 FM
  • Trust Radio FM: English language chat shows, music, requests and local news broadcast from Almería to Vera, Mojacar and the beach up to San Juan
    89.0 FM
  • Valle Radio: Radio station with English-language talk, phone-in chat shows and a range of music. Broadcasting from Albox and covering the Almanzora valley and the Almería coast
    89.8 FM

Radio on the Internet

Many international radio channels are available streamed live on the Internet. You typically need Real Player (Real Player Basic, the free version, is rather hidden away on the real.com website, but it does exist) although sometimes a feed is available in Windows Media, compatible with the players that have shipped with recent versions of Windows and Microsoft Internet Explorer.

  • Trust Radio: Based in Almería, this station has English language chat shows, music, requests and local news
  • Valle Radio: Broadcasting from Albox, with English-language talk, call-in chat shows and a range of music styles
  • SunshineFm: Based in the Costa Blanca, this station offers music and news online.
  • Wave 96: Broadcasts more music and less talking
  • Raveface: An online radio station specialising in electronic dance music

Television in Almería and Granada

It is possible to access UK-based free-to-air (FTA) programming on the same satellite that broadcasts Sky Digital. Please note, however, that there is no legal way to access encrypted programming on that satellite while in Spain, (such as Sky Digital's premium channels accessible only through a Sky subscription package, or those channels that may only be watched in the UK using a satellite receiver with a free-to-view - FTV - card installed).

Local print publications in English include the following:

  • Andalucía Magazine: with articles on lifestyle, real estate and leisure activities in Andalucía. Available in English, German and Spanish
  • CBNews Costa Almería: weekly English-language newspaper distributed on Fridays across the Almería province. There are news, letters and special feature sections. Subscriptions available online
  • Costa Blanca News: covers the area from Castellón to Almería, with articles on property, motoring and Spanish word glossaries. Published weekly on Fridays. Subscriptions available online
  • The Costa Tropical News: Free monthly magazine with news and information about life on the Costa Tropical
  • Euro Weekly News: a series of six, localised, English-language newspapers distributed free every Thursday throughout mainland Spain, Mallorca and the Algarve. Each edition contains local news, satellite TV guide, plus European news and financial information (including stocks and shares listings), events and items of local interest

  • Friday-Ad: free weekly publication. Available at shops and supermarkets
  • La Revista: free six-weekly colour magazine for English-speaking residents and visitors of Roquetas de Mar. General information and articles related to the local area 
  • Look Out: free quarterly glossy magazine for foreign residents in the south of Spain
  • Sur in English: English language community news, Spanish news, columns, and a large classified ad. section. Published on Fridays. Subscriptions and news available online
  • The Almeria Messenger: Free fortnightly English newspaper with news articles and classifieds section. It is also available to download from the website
  • The New Entertainer: Monthly Almería newspaper for English-speaking residents of and visitors to Almería. Based in Mojácar. The content is purpose-written articles on and about Spain
  • The Olive Press: Granada province fortnightly news publication with news and topics from eastern Andalucía. Published every second Wednesday and available online
  • The Town Crier: news and events from Andalucía

Most major international daily and weekend newspapers from the UK, US and Germany are available at many newsstands, usually on the day following publication.
